Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Omoye ONUH, an enthusiastic Registered Nurse with over 10 years of clinical experience. I am also an Accident and Emergency Nurse. I had my nursing education in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
- Health and safety training to a group of custodians.
How did you get into your current field? And do you enjoy doing it? (E.g. of Field such as nursing, and midwifery)
I have a passion for impacting lives not just the lives of my patients but that of my colleagues as well. I am a good team player with excellent interpersonal skills. Also, I am the CEO of Mobys Healthcare Ltd and co-founder of Royale Nursing Consult
I was inspired to join the nursing profession by Nurse Mrs. Ikino of blessed memory. She worked in the Teaching hospital in my state and also ran a Nursing home in my village.
She was our family nurse as we all went to her nursing home any time we fell ill. I recall how I will tell my Dad that I want to be a nurse like her and he will reply that I will even be greater than Mrs Ikino.
Can you tell us about your favorite nursing or midwifery moment? (keeping things confidential for clients involved)
I got a lot of memorable moments as an emergency Nurse: nursing an unconscious patient back to life; arresting bleeding; reviving a Hypoglycemic patient with glucose. These memories are so graphic and unforgettable. I will take you through a particular encounter with a patient.
He sustained a head injury through a road traffic accident and required invasive surgery to remove fluid collections in his brain. He refused to give his consent to the Neuro team despite his family’s intervention. I took it upon myself to find out why he was refusing treatment.
I deployed my nursing skills and probed him privately. He opened up to me that he had a phobia for the operation theatre and feared for his life. I allayed his fears and he gave his consent subsequently. His family with the neuro team were amazed and asked me how I did it? I answered, therapeutic communication!
It was not easy convincing the patient, but I liaised with nurses in the Neuro ward to get a discharged patient who had undergone a similar procedure to come to the hospital and share his experience. We also took him to the theatre to see what the place looks like. He calmed down and gave his consent on the 3rd day. He still drops by to say hello once in a while.
I love my profession, that’s what gives me the kick every day!
